Joules of the week #4
The winds are blowing in the direction of energy transition
What a week in ENERGY! And if last week was so much about technology and energy transition, then this is not different. The GAME CHANGING times are now!
ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell need to act faster
This is why - let’s take the POLITICO article1 that summarized the three parallel events from Wednesday: ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell need to shift strategies and reduce emissions. They are not quick enough, they are not clear enough and they need to do more. A carbon-free industrial future is where we need to move and accelerate. This comes from clean energy sources, but also production optimization and digitalization of operating assets is VITAL in terms of reducing the carbon foot print rapidly. Read more in last weeks’ “Joules”2 along with the references given there.
Production optimization is a must!
The industry roundtable talk hosted by ROCSOLE on June 8 with participants from Shell, Suez and Fourphase will center on the topic of production optimization and debottlenecking - this will be an interesting event!

Digitalization of pipeline operations
Only in US there are more than 2.4 million miles of pipelines for hydrocarbon production and transportation. Listen to the digital innovation for pipeline operations improving the utilization on Geoffrey Cann’s excellent Digital Oil and Gas podcast interviewing Vicki Knott3, CEO and co-founder of Crux OCM - digitalization is key in production optimization and efficiency increases.
WEF: Fostering Effective Energy Transition
The World Economic Forum report on the energy transition is a good read for the weekend4. Here again the mantra is the same - the speed of the energy transition needs to increase. And to ensure a robust and resilient progress, energy transition needs to be firmly rooted in legislation, consumer awareness, infrastructure and investments.
European sustainable renewable fuel alliance
But let’s not stop here - the e-fuel alliance in Europe5, with 233 signing parties, will help to meet the CO2 targets.
METAL PRODUCTION TO CUT CARBON EMISSIONS
Fossil-free steel scaling up - read more in my CARS - Past, Fast & Future letter “Whoosh …#4”6.
Hydrogen cooperation for development & operation of hydrogen electrolysers
Hydro and Everfuel have signed an MoU - next to Hydro-operated aluminum plants the intention is to developed hydrogen electrolysers7, which will provide energy to the aluminum production, which is highly energy-intense.
Use Cases for HYDROGEN
And as hydrogen is mentioned, here is one overview of hydrogen use cases:
The winds are blowing
Let’s wrap up with some “windy” news:
The consortium between Aker Solutions and Siemens Energy announced to have been awarded the East Anglia THREE project wind farm high-voltage direct current converter stations8. Installed capacity will reach 1400 MW.
